Important Gang Laws

The definition of a criminal street gang is:

"Any ongoing organization, association, or group of three or more persons, whether formal or informal, having as one of its primary activities, the commission of one or more of the criminal acts enumerated in section 186.22(E)(1-25) of the California Penal Code, having a common name or identifying sign or symbol and whose members individually or collectively engage in or have engaged in a pattern of criminal gang activity."

Here are some of the sections of the California Penal Code that often are associated with gang members.

California Penal Code 186.20 also known as the "California Street Terrorism Enforcement and Prevention Act" or STEP Act passed in 1988.
California Penal Code186.22(a), participating in a listed crime as a gang member.
California Penal Code 186.22(b), participating in a crime that benifits or furthers a criminal street gang.
California Penal Code 186.22(b)(4) , gang enhancement.
California Penal Code 186.22(e)(f), criminal street gang defined.
California Penal Code 187, murder.
California Penal Code 211, robbery.
California Penal Code 246, shooting into an inhabited dwelling.
